Tanker Practice Test
The Tanker endorsement is required for CDL drivers transporting liquids or gases in bulk. Our free practice test covers liquid surge, baffles, high center of gravity, and the special handling techniques needed to safely operate tank vehicles.
What's on the Tanker Test
The tanker knowledge test covers the unique hazards of transporting liquids and gases in bulk. You'll be tested on liquid surge, baffled vs. unbaffled tanks, high center of gravity effects, smooth braking and acceleration, and emergency procedures for leaks and spills.
Who Needs a Tanker Endorsement
You need a Tanker endorsement if you transport any liquid or gaseous material in a tank vehicle that has a rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more, or if you transport any quantity of a hazardous material in a tank vehicle. This includes fuel tankers, milk trucks, water trucks, and chemical transporters.
Sample Practice Questions
1. What is liquid surge?
- A.A leak in the tank
- B.The movement of liquid in a partially filled tank
- C.A type of brake
- D.The pressure in the air tank
Answer: B. Liquid surge is the back-and-forth movement of liquid inside a partially filled tank, which can affect the vehicle's stability and increase stopping distance.
2. What is the purpose of baffles in a tank?
- A.To increase tank capacity
- B.To slow the flow of liquid and reduce surge
- C.To separate different liquids
- D.To cool the liquid
Answer: B. Baffles are dividers inside the tank with holes that slow the movement of liquid, reducing surge and improving vehicle control.
3. Why do tank vehicles have a high center of gravity?
- A.Because they carry heavy cargo
- B.Because the liquid is carried above the wheels
- C.Because the tank is very wide
- D.Because of the suspension design
Answer: B. The liquid sits high in the tank above the wheels, raising the center of gravity and making the vehicle more prone to rollover on curves and ramps.
4. How should you drive a tank vehicle differently from other trucks?
- A.Faster to keep the liquid moving
- B.More slowly and smoothly, especially on curves
- C.With the brakes applied constantly
- D.The same as any other truck
Answer: B. The high center of gravity and liquid surge mean tank vehicles require gentler braking, acceleration, and cornering to avoid rollover and loss of control.
5. What is outage in a tank vehicle?
- A.A power failure
- B.The space left in a tank for liquid to expand
- C.A type of valve
- D.The distance between stops
Answer: B. Outage is the extra space left in a tank to allow liquid to expand as it warms, preventing overflow and dangerous pressure buildup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the Tanker endorsement test?
The tanker knowledge test typically has 20 questions. You must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass.
Do I need a Tanker endorsement for a dry bulk trailer?
No. The Tanker endorsement is for liquids and gases. Dry bulk trailers like grain or sand hoppers do not require it.
Do I also need a Hazmat endorsement for tanker work?
Only if the liquid or gas you're hauling is classified as hazardous. Many tanker jobs require both Tanker and Hazmat endorsements.
Is driving a tanker more dangerous than other trucks?
Tankers have unique risks like liquid surge and high rollover risk, but proper training and the Tanker endorsement prepare you to handle them safely.
