Hazmat Endorsement Practice Test

The Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement allows CDL drivers to transport dangerous goods safely and legally. Our free practice test covers placards, shipping papers, emergency procedures, and the federal regulations you need to pass the knowledge exam on your first try.

What's on the Hazmat Test

The hazmat knowledge test draws from the federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171–180). You'll be tested on identifying hazard classes and divisions, reading placards and labels, preparing shipping papers, loading and unloading procedures, emergency response, and the safe operation of a vehicle carrying hazardous materials. The exam is 30 questions with an 80% pass threshold.

Who Needs a Hazmat Endorsement

You need a Hazmat endorsement on your Commercial Driver's License if you transport any material the U.S. DOT classifies as hazardous in a quantity that requires placarding. This includes drivers hauling flammable liquids, corrosives, explosives, compressed gases, radioactive materials, and poisons. Tanker drivers, freight carriers, and hazmat-specific haulers all commonly need it. Getting the endorsement requires passing the knowledge test, a TSA background check, and fingerprinting.
